Lakes Area Powersports is an all-season sport shop located just north of Walker, MN. Our staff looks forward to serving you on your next visit to the beautiful area of Northern Minnesota.

Who We Are

Doug and Mary Jo Wolter grew up in Walker and always had a desire to move back.  Both graduates of Bemidji State University, life’s journeys took them from Minnesota to Michigan and back, finally landing in Thief River Falls.   With a background in engineering, Doug worked at Arctic Cat as an ATV Product Engineer then Director of Snowmobile Engineering.  Mary Jo Wolter worked as an Accountant at Pennington County Highway Department and later at Arctic Cat as a Cost Accountant then an SAP Business Analyst.   

Finally, in 2015 their dream came true.  The Wolters purchased Walker Power Equipment in June of 2015 and named it Lakes Area Powersports.  Polaris Off-road vehicles and snowmobiles, Ski Doo snowmobiles and Stihl were the initial product offerings.  The Wolters quickly added Can Am Off-Road, Sea Doo, Floe docks/lifts/trailers and Klim riding gear.  In 2016, Toro was added, and eventually Lynx, Sea Doo Switch, Duratracks, Mattracks, Bercomac, SledEz, Roll-n-go, trailers from Triton, Floe, Trophy, Karavan, Mid America, as well as 509 and FXR riding gear.  

As the business continued to grow and the need for additional storage became apparent, the Wolters purchased additional property across the street.  In 2021, a complete remodel and addition of the existing buildings began.   Today, the parts & service team enjoy four service bays, a big parts room, receiving room and a new retail area.   The original building was gutted and remodeled to make way for a newly expanded showroom.  One of the original service bays is home to our fantastic build team.  Yes folks…………your machine is assembled at your local dealership.

Initially a team of five, Lakes Area Powersports has expanded to fourteen dedicated full-time team members with four additional seasonal team members.  Check out the bios of our awesome team under Dealer Info->Our Team .
